Taking care for your pearls
When it comes to your pearl jewelry, it is best to follow this simple rule:
'Last thing on, First thing off.' for your pearls.
Wearing your pearls while you are getting ready exposure it to harmful chemicals that can cause damage. These chemicals can come from simple objects like hairspray, perfume, and even your makeup which can cause your pearls to become dull and dirty. Your pearls will stay cleaner if you put them on AFTER you've applied your makeup and perfume. Your pearls should be the FIRST thing you take off. Pearls can have a similar reaction to the types of cleansers, toners, and lotions you use as well as makeup removal solutions.
* Wipe your pearls with a soft cloth or chamois as soon as you take them off, which may be dry or damp. If damp, allow the pearls to air dry before putting them away. Do not hang pearls to dry.
* Never clean or use on dish or wash detergents, bleaches, powdered cleansers, baking soda or solutions that contain ammonia or harsh detergents.
* Don't put pearl jewelry in an ultrasonic cleaner.
Don't use abrasive cleaners or rub pearls with toothbrushes or abrasive cloth.
Storing Pearls
Don't store your pearls with other jewelry, because they can be scratched easily when metal or gemstones rub against them. Find a special slot in your jewelry box for the pearls, or keep them in a soft bag made from chamois or another non-abrasive material. Most safe deposit vaults have dry air and can damage pearls. Remember, Pearls are delicate and will not last forever like diamonds if they are not properly cared for. Because pearls are organic matter they need moisture to maintain their appearance. Wipe them regularly with a soft cloth moistened with water.
